Trapeze releases new album by world music legend Hugh Masekela

Trapeze Music & Entertainment Ltd. has acquired the UK rights to the new album by the legendary South African world music artist Hugh Masekela, “No Borders”, and it is released on the Trapeze label in the UK on 1st December, distributed by Discovery Records.

Hugh Masekela is a world-renowned flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, singer and defiant political voice who has maintained a close influence on, and involvement in, his home country of South Africa, while building a stellar international career through over half a century of performing and recording.

Having established his trademark Afro-Jazz style, he left South Africa and during what was effectively three decades of voluntary exile between 1960 and the ending of apartheid in South Africa and the freeing of Nelson Mandela, he worked with major names in jazz, rock, funk, acoustic and all shades of world music around the world expressing his African musical roots through the idioms of the environments he was welcomed into. In making some eclectic and remarkable music over the years, he has continued to provide a voice for the millions in Africa whose lives are still blighted by political, social and economic privations.

On this new album, Bra Hugh works with Nigerian guitarist and producer Kunle Ayo on material which addresses the wider international African world, with songs relating to Nigeria, Rhythm & Blues America, the days of slavery plantations in the USA, the Zulu urban realms of South Africa, Johannesburg’s townships, American folk music roots, the Caribbean and more. Other featured musicians include guitarist Themba Mokoena, Fana Zulu on bass, Tukumba Dyani on percussion among many others.

Now 78 years old, and still actively performing this album is another step in pursuing Masekela’s stated objective: “My biggest obsession is to show Africans and the world who the people of Africa really are.”

Trapeze CEO John Cooper commented: “We are delighted to be able to make this album available in the UK, and it’s a privilege to be working with an artist who has made such an outstanding contribution to music over several decades”.

Trapeze encompasses not only the Trapeze label, but also maintains its flagship Acrobat and Fabulous labels, with a substantial catalogue of over 800 titles in specialist and collectors repertoire covering pop, R&B, blues, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, country, gospel, folk and world, and nostalgia genres.

The Trapeze labels are distributed through the company’s wholly-owned Corsham-based distribution operation, Discovery Records.
