Sammy Cahn, celebrated American songwriter, was born on 18th June 1913

We are very late with this one, but today gives a chance to slot in a mention for one of the industry's illustrious back-room boys. Born Samuel Cohen in New York's Lower East Side on June 18th 1913, the son of Polish Jewish immigrants, he changed his name twice, once to avoid confusion with actor Sammy Cohen, and then to avoid confusion with lyricist Gus Kahn. He followed a typical path, learning to play piano and violin as a child, growing up a fan of vaudeville, and then plying his trade round the music publishers amid the flurry of Broadway shows and revues in the '30s. Primarily a lyricist, he mostly worked with collaborators - Saul Chaplin in the early days, Lou Levy (with whom he wrote for Jimmie Lunceford and Andy Kirk), and of course in the post-war years, when based in Los Angeles, Jimmy Van Heusen, the two of them holding court in Hollywood's bars, presenting songs to Hollywood and Capitol Records' classic roster of artists - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee. He won four Academy Awards (he was nominated for 23) for "Three coins in the fountain" (with Jules Styne), "All the way", "High hopes" and "Call me irresponsible" (all with Jimmy Van Heusen). His association with Sinatra, which began when Tommy Dorsey was a regular client back in the swing era, brought him his highest profile successes in the '50s. In 1988, the Sammy Awards for movie songs and scores were inaugurated in his honour, and he took over from Johnny Mercer as president of the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972. He died in 1993 in Los Angeles at the age of 79. He was one of the great writers, and a trawl through the Acrobat database indicates the ubiquity of Cahn's songs in the repertoire of artists who were the archetypal interpreters of the Great American Songbook - not only Sinatra, but Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, the Dorseys, Benny Goodman, Mario Lanza, Frankie Laine and many more. If it's subject that captures your imagination, do a search of the web for Sammy Cahn songs and cross-reference them with the Titles listing on the site, and you'll find plenty in the catalogue.
