Bob Crosby, vocalist and Dixieland bandleader, was born on 23rd August 1913
Bob Crosby was born in Spokane Washington in 1913, ten years after brother Harry, better known as Bing. He started singing with the Anson Weeks and Dorsey Brothers orchestras in the early 30s before being invited to take over as leader of the former Ben Pollack outfit in 1935. Throughout the next 20 years Crosby ran both his big band and the perhaps better-known small group the Bob-Cats, both essentially playing Dixieland-based jazz, with a number of future stars passing through the ranks. He had many hits, including the original version of the classic drums/bas duet "Big Noise From Winnetka". During the War he toured with his bands and established a successful radio career with regular series on NBC and CBS. After the War he turned to TV, taking over the orchestra on the Jack Benny show, while his trad jazz revival meant his band retained a consistently high profile through to the 60s. Acrobat has on catalogue a collection of recordings by his small band, the Bob-Cats. For full details click here.
