Jerry Lee Lewis, pioneering rock 'n' roll star, was born on 29th Sept. 1935

Jerry Lee Lewis was born in Louisiana to poor farmers in the Depression years of the mid-30s, and started playing piano with his cousins when he was young. His parents mortgaged the farm to buy him a piano, and Jerry Lee fell under the influence of the music from juke joint frequented by the black populace he developed a style and repertoire combining boogie-woogie, gospel and R&B and began playing to local white audiences. He went to Bible college, his mother expecting him to play church music, but was expelled for playing "the devils music" in church. He started playing in clubs in Mississippi, his music presaging the burgeoning rock 'n'roll style before it became nationally popular, making his first demo record in 1954. After failing to attract interest in Nashville, he went to Memphis and auditioned for the Sun label, and begand recording in his own right and as a session player for the likes of Carl Perkins. He recorded in the famous Million Dollar Quartet jam session with Elvis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash in 1956, and the following year had his solo brekathrough with "Whole lotta shakin' goin' on" and "Great balls of fire". His dynamic performances and overt lyrics courted controversy, which became open scandal when his marriage to his 13-year old cousin was revealed during a UK tour in 1958, and he effectively disappeared from the business for a while.  He gradually rehabiliatated his career during the '60s, and found a new niche in the country market, where he had strong roots. His personal life has continued to be stormy and tragic, having been married six times, but after being one of the first inductees into the Rock 'n' Rioll Hall of Fame in 1986, Lewis has continued to be recognised as one of the greats of the genre, and has made many high-profile appearances in the first decade of the new century. Acrobat has on catalogue a 'live' album from the '80s - for details click here.
