Eddie Fisher, American pop idol of the '50s, died on 22nd September 2010
Here's a chance to recognise one of the iconic stars of the pre-rock ‘n’ roll era in the early 50s, whose chart record rivalled that of Elvis, and who died just a couple of years ago. Eddie Fisher was born in August 1928 in Philadelphia, the fourth of seven children of Russian Jewish immigrants. He sang from an early age, and performed successfully in talent contests as a child and performed on local radio, to the extent that he dropped out of high school to pursue a singing career, and by 1946 was crooning with local big bands. Eddie Cantor heard him and put him on his radio show, making such an impact that he immediately got a recording contract with RCA, getting his first Top 10 hit in 1950 with "Thinking of you". he was drafted in 1951, but continued performing in the Forces as the vocalist for the US Army Band. Back in civvy street, he had his first No. 1 in 1952 with "Wish you were here", his first big UK hits well, and from 1953 had his own radio show "Coke Time with Eddie Fisher". This was his heyday as a teen idol, with a string of Top 10 hits, and no less than 35 Top 40 entries in a 5-year period in the mid '50s, including two UK No. 1s. with "Outside of heaven" and "I'm walking behind you". He made his first movie in 1956 with his wife Debbie Reynolds, but then caused a scandal by divorcing her to marry Elizabeth Taylor, the publicity causing him to have his TV series dropped. He appeared with Taylor in "Butterfield 8" in 1960, probably his biggest movie. He later married another singer and movie star Connie Stevens. His recording career had long since peaked by then, overtaken by rock 'n' roll, and his subsequent life was plagued by problems associated with addiction to prescription drugs, although over the years he successfully rehabilitated his career, and continued to record and perform during succeeding decades, becoming a big attraction in Las Vegas. Acrobat has on catalogue an album of his greatest hits - for details click here.
