Percy Sledge, American R&B and soul singer, was born on 25th November 1940

Born on 25th November 1940 in Leighton, Alabama, Percy Sledge sang with a local combo at the weekends while working as a hosiptal porter, until a mutual friend introduced him to record producer Quin Ivy. "When A Man Loves A Woman" was the first single under the Atlantic recording contract Ivy secured for him, a song he co-wrote with his musicians. It went to No. 1 in the USA and went gold, becoming the basis of his career, reaching No. 4 in the UK, followed up by "Warm And Tender  Love". Although he has had only intermittent chart success over the years, he is a successful concert performer around the world, and his career enjoyed a boost when his landmark hit was used in a Levi's TV commercial in the '80s, and he has recorded excellent albums since then. He was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Acrobat has on catalogue a collection of his later recordings of his hits - for details click here.
