Tina Turner, American soul singer, was born on 26th November 1939

Born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee on November 26th 1949, Tina Turner has earned herself a fully-justifed reputation as the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll. She met Ike Turner at a local show when she was 18 and asked if she could sing with his band, and after much pestering, he agreed. She deputised for the regular vocalist at a recording session in 1960 and "A Fool In Love" was a No. 2 R&B hit. Ike Turner re-launched the act as The Ike & Tina Turner Reveue and a legend was born. The landmark hit "River Deep Mountain High" established them as a high profile force, and others followed, although behind the scenes she was suffering what has become much-doumented abuse. She eventually split from Ike in 1976, and after several years in the wilderness returned with staggering brilliant and successful singles and albums in the 1980s, leading t9 movie roles and a string of industry awards. She has now earnt more accolades as perhaps one of the most successul female artists of all time, and she remains a powerful performer who defies the march of time, now in her '70s.
