Glenn Miller, legendary swing bandleader, was born on March 1st 1904

Glenn Miller's music, perhaps more than that of any other artist, with the possible exception of Vera Lynn, is instantly evocative of the times when it brought morale-boosting escapism and fun to populations suffering the hardships of wartime. Miller had paid his dues working with the orchestras and early swing bands of the late '20s and '30s - Ben Pollack, Red Nichols and the Dorsey Brothers, developing his composing and arranging skills along the way. In 1935 he assembled an American band for British bandleader Ray Noble, which gave him his first movie experience, and also was where he developed his trademark sound of a lead clarinet over four saxophones. By 1937 he had his own orchestra, and the rest, as they say, is history. The work that Miller did on both sides of the Atlantic, performing incessantly during the latter years of World War II to entertain troops, workers and indeed everyone else, was legendary, and it was when travelling to France in December 1944 to play to troops who had liberated Paris that his plane disappeared, and he was presumed dead at the age of 40. His legacy of fantastic recordings remains as popular today as ever, and Acrobat has two CDs of his best-known material, and a 3-CD collection of radio shows from 1939. For details click here.
