These 48 recordings, all made in New York City between 1949 and 1954 illustrate just how relatively small a coterie of musicians were involved in producing Blues and R&B records in that City. Ever since the 1920s the city had been one of the nation’s most important recording centres, home to most of the major labels, all of whom had recording studios in the city.
