Powerhouse performer, Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, was a singing sensation who did not get the recognition her talents so richly deserved. A big woman with a big personality, Big Mama Thornton possessed one of the most soulful voices in R&B history. She had a huge-selling R&B No.1 with the original recording of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller’s Hound Dog, but would see her success eclipsed by Elvis Presley who would go on to sell 10 million copies globally with his cover on his way to being crowned The King of Rock ’n’ Roll.
