Alma Cogan, born in Whitechapel, in the East End of London in 1932, was a British pop singer, who enjoyed huge success in the UK during the 1950s and into the early 60s, and was one of the few artists to maintain a chart profile from the early ‘50s through the upheaval caused by the advent of rock ‘n’ roll and beyond. Her career was tragically brought to an end by cancer in 1966 at the age of just 34. Known as “The Girl With A Giggle In Her Voice”, she specialised in old-school pop, with her releases and hits liberally sprinkled with covers of US hits and novelty-flavoured material. This 59-track 2-CD collection comprises all her 21 UK hits, along with selected A and B sides of her UK releases on HMV and Columbia during this era. It features her UK No. 1 “Dreamboat”, along with the Top 20 entries “Bell Bottom Blues”, “I Can’t Tell A Waltz From A Tango”, “Never Do A Tango With An Eskimo”, “Little Things Mean A Lot”, “Sugartime”, “Twenty Tiny Fingers” and more. Along with her mother, she managed her own career, designed and made her dozens of stage gowns, and made her Kensington home a centre of London showbiz life, with the Beatles as regular guests. She was a highly individual personality and this collection is an entertaining showcase for her distinctive style of pop.
