First in our series devoted to the early pioneers of black vocal group harmony - "The Road to Doowop" - devoted to the pop and gospel orientated groups who paved the way for the doowop explosion of the 50's. The Golden Gate Quartet were one of the earliest groups on record and their close harmony style was hugely popular in the 30's and 40's when they enjoyed several hits with wartime protest and religious songs.
