The Thelonious Monk Collection 1941-61

Thelonious Monk in undoubtedly one of the most important and distinctive pianists to emerge in the post-war era, with a unique style which was at times controversial and misunderstood, but with an ability to develop improvisations in a musically logical and coherent way. As the house pianist at Minton’s, widely regarded as the spiritual home of bebop, he took part in the legendary late-night improvised sessions in the early ‘40s alongside the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Charlie Christian, and over the next two decades, he worked with a remarkable array of the genre’s top names in small group line-ups, as well as making solo recordings. It was with a series of albums in the mid-to late ‘50s that the wider market finally latched on to what aficionados had appreciated for some time in his unique approach to jazz.
