Andres Segovia, celebrated Spanish classical guitarist, was born on 21st Feb. 1893
We're a couple of days late with this reference due to a coincidence of anniversaries. Andres Torres Segovia, 1st Marquis of Salobreña, was born in Linares in Andalusia on February 21st 1893. It is impossible for us to do any justice to his illustrious story in a few words here, but suffice to say he was undoubtedly the most important figure in the world of classical guitar during the 20th century, and possibly in the entire history of that strand of music. He worked in the Spanish romantic-modern style, very different from the flamenco style most often associated with the Spanish guitar, and he broadened the repertoire of the instrument by adapting works written for other instruments, encouraging composers not in the field of the guitar to write new works for him and by composing new works himself. Not surprisingly, he became the guru for aspiring guitarists such as John Williams, and Acrobat has on catalogue an album of recordings by Segovia and John Williams independently interpreting transcriptions made by Segovia of compositions by J.S. Bach. For full details, click here.
