Freddy Cannon was one of the second wave of rock ‘n’ roll artists to make their mark on the US and UK pop scenes in the late ‘50s, bringing a more Tin Pan Alley influenced style to the genre. He had a with a string of hits on both sides of the Atlantic that included some inspired re-workings of vaudeville standards as well as material from the illustrious writing and production team of Frank Slay and Bob Crewe – the latter went on to have huge success with The Four Seasons. This great-value 55-track 2-CD set comprises all his releases on the Swan label from 1959 through to 1962, including all the A and B sides of his singles, plus the tracks from his three albums during that period did not otherwise appear on singles. It also includes at the beginning, by way of a bonus, the two tracks from a 1958 single by The Spindrifts with whom Freddy was the singer. It’s a thorough overview of the most prolific hit-making period of his career and features all his Top 10 hits – “Tallahassee Lassie”, “Way Down Yonder In New Orleans” and “Palisades Park”. |
